To batteries and beyond: The storage technologies poised to play a key role in the energy transition

At least 33 U.S. utilities are aiming to become carbon-free or reach net-zero emissions by 2050. These are some of the technologies that could help them get there.

By the end of 2019, approximately one out of three Americans lived in a state or community that has committed to or achieved 100% clean electricity, and experts say that getting to these ambitious goals will require large amounts of storage to smooth out electricity supply on a renewables-heavy grid.

Utility Dive has collected four articles highlighting the following technologies: hydrogen, pumped hydro, battery chemistries other than li-ion, and compressed air and liquid air energy storage.
