The energy storage industry continues to experience remarkable growth as we march toward realization of 35 GW of new energy storage by 2025. And with such enormous momentum forward comes responsibility.

In March of 2019, ESA introduced its efforts to launch the Energy Storage Corporate Responsibility Initiative (CRI), publicized with the execution of the Corporate Responsibility Pledge by stakeholders on April 18, 2019. Signatories to the pledge signaled their intent to engage in a good-faith effort to optimize performance, minimize risk and serve as an exemplary corporate citizen in the manufacturing, deployment, implementation and operation of energy storage projects across the United States.

The pledge event was immediately followed by the inaugural CRI Task Force meeting, where participants convened to establish best practices in the following areas: potential operational hazards, end-of-life and recycling, and responsible supply chain practices.

To date, the CRI has published the following:

End of Life

Guidelines for End of Life and Recycling of Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage Systems (August 2020)

End-of-Life Management of Lithium-ion Energy Storage Systems (April 2020)

Operational Safety

Guidelines for U.S. Energy Storage Operational Safety (December 2019)

Operational Risk Management in the U.S. Energy Storage Industry: Lithium-Ion Fire and Thermal Event Safety (December 2019)

Energy Storage Corporate Responsibility Initiative Emergency Response Plan (September 2019)

Interested? Stakeholders can review the Frequently Asked Questions page for more information about the Pledge and CRI.

It’s not too late to join us in the Energy Storage Corporate Responsibility Initiative, beginning with the execution of the CRI Pledge. Once executed, please email it to info@energystorageassociationarchive.org
