ESA Requests Significant Increases in FY21 Federal Innovation Investments for Energy Storage

Today ESA filed testimony with the Energy & Water Development Subcommittees of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees requesting significant public investment in energy storage innovation. Specifically, ESA requested $300 million for energy storage across all Department of Energy (DOE) programs, approximately 50% greater than the current White House request. ESA also asks Congressional appropriators to direct DOE to undertake a series of activities under existing authorities, including: demonstration projects of longer-duration storage; developing a resilience valuation framework; demonstrating more hybrid storage-plus-generation operations; and conducting studies of storage contribution to resource adequacy. Finally, noting economic disruption from the current public health emergency, ESA requests Congressional appropriators to increase assistance on distribution system mapping & interconnection and use existing authority to provide grants for resilient storage systems.
