ESA CEO Kelly Speakes-Backman on PJM Proposal to Reform Capacity Accreditation of Energy Storage

The proposal PJM filed last week at FERC to reform the capacity accreditation of energy storage and other resources marks a critical step toward a clean energy future, where the contribution of storage to system reliability can be fully recognized and fully valued. We commend PJM executives and staff for working diligently with ESA and the energy storage industry to develop an innovative framework for storage that has broad support among stakeholders. PJM’s proposal before FERC is a productive outcome of the decision taken by Chairman Chatterjee and his fellow Commissioners to direct PJM to re-visit capacity accreditation of storage as a consequence of ESA’s study and arguments over its compliance with the landmark Order 841. We applaud Chairman Chatterjee’s leadership on storage and encourage the Commission to speedily approve PJM’s broadly supported proposal, ensuring energy storage can participate effectively in forthcoming capacity market auctions without delay.”
