CAISO approves hybrid storage policies as California preps to add 1.5 GW by 2022

The California Independent System Operator’s (CAISO) board of governors last week approved market policies to better integrate new battery storage resources that would allow hybrid storage resources to provide energy and ancillary services to contribute to transmission system reliability. The system operator moved quickly to approve the proposal in light of the more than 1,500 MW of storage capacity expected to come online in California by the end of next year. This is part of around 3,300 MW of new procurement that the state is seeking to replace retiring fossil fuel plants by 2023.

Form Energy Raises Another $70M for Long-Duration Storage

Form Energy raised a $70 million Series C to scale its super-long-duration energy storage technology. That investment was first reported by Reuters Friday, without naming the participating investors. It brings Form Energy’s total funds raised to around $120 million, a hefty sum for a novel technology that’s still a few years away from its first commercial deployment.

Tesla Has a New Public Competitor in Power Storage

Eos Energy Enterprises uses zinc-based batteries to hold electricity generated by facilities such as windmills. The technology has the potential to be less expensive than the lithium-based batteries Tesla uses. Eos Energy Enterprises completed its merger with a special-purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, on Monday, and began trading on Tuesday under the ticker EOSE. Both companies offer the ability to store power produced by renewable but unpredictable assets such as solar power so that it can be used when demand is the highest.

In Rare Battery Startup Move to Public Markets, Eos Raises Millions From Listing on Nasdaq

Challenging lithium-ion’s battery market supremacy is not easy, but Eos will at least get a capital infusion to fund its growth. Eos Energy Storage, the aqueous zinc battery startup, listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange Tuesday after CEO Joe Mastrangelo virtually rang the opening bell. The 12-year-old company now goes by the name Eos Energy Enterprise, Inc. and trades under the symbol EOSE. Rather than conduct a traditional initial public offering, Eos partnered with a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) called B. Riley Principal Merger Corp. II.

To batteries and beyond: The storage technologies poised to play a key role in the energy transition

At least 33 U.S. utilities are aiming to become carbon-free or reach net-zero emissions by 2050. These are some of the technologies that could help them get there.

By the end of 2019, approximately one out of three Americans lived in a state or community that has committed to or achieved 100% clean electricity, and experts say that getting to these ambitious goals will require large amounts of storage to smooth out electricity supply on a renewables-heavy grid.

Utility Dive has collected four articles highlighting the following technologies: hydrogen, pumped hydro, battery chemistries other than li-ion, and compressed air and liquid air energy storage.
