Bay Area Energy Agencies Launch Storage Solicitation Amid PG&E Power Shutoffs

Four local energy agencies in the San Francisco Bay area announced a joint solicitation today for the installation of more than 30 MW of energy storage for residential and business customers across three counties. The storage may be combined with new or existing solar systems and comes as utility customers look to other energy options, including distributed solar and storage, amid planned power shutoffs. The groups expect to choose partner vendor(s) in early 2020 with program details released in spring 2020 and projects “underway soon after with the intent of preempting the next fire season.”

Webinar: Long Duration Storage: Where are We Now and Where are We Headed?

This webinar is free for ESA members; $75 for non-members. The slides and recording will be available to all registrants. Register here.

Join us November 20 at 2pm EST for a webinar that will review the several energy storage technologies that can provide reliable energy beyond the durations that are presently commonplace. These technologies meet many existing needs, from power during grid outages to helping utilities and large users meet peak demand by using storage to shave peak load, thus reducing or eliminating the need for power from fossil-fuel peaker generation. They also represent foundation technologies for developing future, longer-duration storage solutions.

Bulking Up: Storage Heads for Center Stage

Until recently, battery energy storage has largely served markets at the margin, offering short bursts of frequency regulation or light pricing arbitrage. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), however, utility-scale storage is about to leap forward in the U.S. The growth is being driven not just by falling storage costs, but also continuous price drops for clean generation. Forecasters largely missed this emerging dynamic. Although storage’s progress down the cost curve has historically been slower, whole system costs have continued to fall as wind and solar became the cheapest form of generation.

Interior Gives VI Energy Office $625000 to Support Energy Resilience at Hurricane Shelters

The Virgin Islands Energy Office (VIEO) was chosen as a recipient of $625,000 in Fiscal Year 2019 funding under the Energizing Insular Communities (EIC) grant program, funded and administered through the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs. The VIEO will utilize the grant to develop a Solar Plus Storage Micro-Grid pilot project that will be integrated at the St. Croix Educational Complex’s emergency hurricane shelter. The micro-grid will enable the emergency shelter to function reliably during extended grid outages and significantly reduce the use of fossil fuel generators that have proven difficult to maintain and costly to fuel.
