Battery Storage Called Into Action As UK Suffers Country-Wide Power Cuts

Battery storage assets were called into action last week after the UK suffered country-wide power outages following a transmission system stress event. On August 9th, two large generators were disconnected from the UK’s power system almost simultaneously, effectively taking 2GW worth of electricity generation within minutes of each other. That collapse in generation sent the country’s transmission grid frequency to dip, so National Grid, the country’s electricity system operator, called on reserve and flexible generation capacity to respond, with many operators dispatching battery storage capacity to meet National Grid ESO’s calls.

Energy Storage Earns More Awards for KIUC

Kauai Island Utility Cooperative led the nation again in 2018 for interconnection of energy storage watts per customer, and ranked second in annual energy storage capacity, according to the Smart Electric Power Alliance. In 2018, KIUC posted more than 3,000 Wh/C, nearly six times more than the next ranked utility: Sterling Municipal Light Department in Massachusetts. This is the second year running that KIUC topped the list of storage watts per customer.

Texas Gives Public Power a Leg Up on Energy Storage

In a few weeks, municipal utilities and electric cooperatives in the state of Texas will have legal confirmation on their right to own energy storage facilities that sell energy or ancillary services, while not having to register as an energy generator. Current policy in the state defines energy storage as a generation asset, which requires owners to register as power generators.

Dominion Submits $33M Battery Storage Pilot Plan

Dominion Energy Virginia announced Tuesday it is planning to spend around $33 million to build four electric power battery storage projects at three sites in central Virginia. The pilot projects, totaling 16 megawatts, would be the utility’s first use of battery storage technology. The projects will test different applications for battery storage, which is increasingly seen as a way to improve the resiliency of the electrical grid and better integrate renewables such as wind and solar. The pilot projects are required under a 2018 overhaul of the state’s electric utility regulation. Dominion submitted an application with state regulators Friday.

Stacks on Value Stacks: The Large-Scale Solar Plus Storage Market Is Coming Together

The United States will grow to be the largest global market for solar + storage this year, where peaking capacity requirements are driving procurement, according to a recent IHS Markit study. Utility-scale solar + storage projects now are online or being built in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Indiana and Florida, and the list grows. In March, NextEra Energy said it would build the Florida Power and Light Manatee Energy Storage Center’s battery system, with four times the capacity of the world’s largest battery system currently in operation.
