Energy storage systems introduce increased flexibility into the electric grid and end use of energy. In the second of ESA’s StoragePLUS Network webinars, we heard from General Electric’s Kurt Waldner regarding innovative coupling of energy storage and natural gas system. Our speaker addressed how energy storage can complement gas generation and use in innovative thermal hybrid systems to extend the life of existing assets, mitigate emissions, reduce fuel usage, and provide additional grid services beyond a typical gas generator. Waldner will discuss projects that have successfully done so, why they chose storage+gas, and what the future can hold for couplings of these two energy technologies.

In this meeting, attendees learned:

•  Benefits of pairing energy storage and natural gas in planning and operation,
•  How storage can make gas-based energy systems more efficient to build and operate, and
•  About innovative projects that have leveraged the benefits of each technology to meet energy needs.
