National Grid has issued an energy storage solicitation for 10 MW of bulk, front-of-the-meter storage and power marketer services that maximize the value of the storage in key locations in upstate New York. The request for proposals seeks distribution rights to energy storage that enhances grid reliability and resilience and contributes to achieving the state’s distributed, zero-carbon, renewable energy and climate change goals, according to the investor-owned utility.
Inverter supplier Sungrow has signed a contract to supply its fully integrated energy storage system to a 15-MW/32-MWh solar-plus-storage project in Massachusetts. The project will participate in ISO-New England wholesale markets after completion and is one of the first solar-plus-storage offerings to contribute to the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program, setting the benchmark for Massachusetts’ solar-plus-storage projects.
The U.S. energy storage market is growing tremendously. Indeed, IHS Markit projects that over 40 GW of energy storage capacity will be installed by 2022, starting from a base of only 0.34 GW installed in 2012 and 2013. This growth of the U.S. energy storage market is driven by several commercial and regulatory factors, including an increase in recent utility-scale power purchase agreements, declining costs of lithium-ion batteries, the availability of state and, to a certain extent, federal incentives for solar + storage projects. Engie has been hired by Guam’s state electricity utility to build two solar-plus-storage plants with a combined capacity of 50MWp/300MWh on the Pacific island. The firm scooped up the project duo in the third round of Guam’s competitive renewable tender program after submitting the lowest bid. The plants will deliver more than 85GWh annually and are scheduled to be operational by 2022, according to Engie.
The recent flurry of energy storage project announcements from Massachusetts have been driven in part by a “common sense” approach to tackling the dirtiest impacts of fossil fuel generation. Massachusetts was identified by research firm Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables as one of the leading US states to have “laid the groundwork for supportive storage policies” in recent years, along with New York. Both states, Wood Mackenzie expect, will witness project developments that will contribute to ”substantial growth” US-wide in the early 2020s.
Beaverton is the second Oregon city that will embrace microgrids for resiliency, working with utility Portland General Electric (PGE), which says it plans additional partnerships with cities. PGE’s microgrid projects are designed in part to provide resiliency if and when an earthquake hits the Oregon coast. The city of Beaverton will own their new emergency operations center, 300 kW of solar PV, and a 1,000 kW diesel standby generator. PGE will own the 250 kW storage system, which it will use, when available, for frequency control
A battery storage project using second-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries is set to be built in Germany, with an aim of developing an installed capacity of 20MW. The project is being billed as the largest stationary electricity storage system using EV batteries in Germany, following on from an initial 45MW project in France. The stationary storage system is to be built using EV batteries compiled in containers, using both second-life batteries and new batteries stored for future use in standard replacement during after-sales operations.
PacifiCorp has released a draft of its long-term energy plan, which continues investments in new wind generation and transmission while adding significant new solar and storage resources. In total, the plan includes approximately 7 GW of new renewable energy and storage by 2025. It calls for nearly 600 MW of battery storage by 2025 and more than 2,800 MW of battery storage by 2038.
A legislative package for energy storage research and development (R&D) has been welcomed by the US Energy Storage Association, after receiving approval from the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. An amended version of the Better Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Act was last week approved by the committee after having been introduced in May alongside the Promoting Grid Storage Act of 2019.
