EnCap Investments has directed about $37 billion in venture investment into oil and gas companies over its 30 years in business. Now, it’s making its first investments into clean energy, with a goal of developing up to 2 gigawatts of utility-scale energy storage, either on its own or linked to solar, wind and peaker plants.
SmartFlower Solar has partnered with NEC Energy Solutions, who will be supplying the batteries for the Smartflower +Plus. With battery storage being a major area of growth for the clean energy industry, SmartFlower will be able to continuously provide customers with the ability to produce and store clean, reliable energy whether they’re on or off the grid. The Smartflower +Plus is a self-contained solar energy system with 5.5 kWh of battery storage and is fully integrated.
Enel X has signed an agreement with the University of Massachusetts Boston to install a 1-MW solar facility integrated with a 500-kW/2-MWh lithium-ion energy storage system, as well as 11 Enel X JuiceBox electric vehicle (EV) smart charging stations at the campus. The project is expected to be operational by the first half of 2020. Through the integration of the PV facility with the lithium-ion energy storage system, UMass will be able to generate and store renewable energy to be used when electricity costs are highest, thereby reducing the campus’s grid dependence and energy spending by more than $1.5 million.
GE Renewable Energy has been selected by Convergent Energy and Power to supply of battery energy storage systems for three projects in California with total capacity of 100 megawatt-hours. The scope also includes a long-term service agreement and augmentation guarantees. GE said the project will bring its total battery storage capacity in operation or under construction to 495MWh.
Bolivia will try and capitalize on its large lithium reserves to set up an industrial ecosystem around batteries and other storage technologies, according to a top government official. The country’s vice president Alvaro García Linera described the government’s plans for a “lithium industrialization” drive as he attended the opening of a PV project in Oruro, in Bolivia’s west. “Oruro won’t just produce mineral and power but also lithium, lithium hydroxide, cathodes and lithium batteries,” García said as he toured the 50MW first batch of a 100MW PV complex.
Engie North America has bought a four-project pipeline in Massachusetts that comprises 25MW of solar and 22MWh of energy storage. It is one of a “number” of solar-plus-storage portfolios that will be deployed by Engie under the state’s solar incentive program, the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART). The new projects are expected to be operational by the second half of 2020 and run for 20 years. The energy storage systems will use Engie’s GridSynergy software platform and operate in the ISO New England wholesale markets.
The summer of 2018’s Lake Christine wildfire not only destroyed three homes and torched thousands of acres of forest, it also came dangerously close to taking out the power lines for the upper Roaring Fork Valley. After this close call, Holy Cross Energy partnered with Rocky Mountain Institute to find ways to keep the lights on if there’s another disaster.
Ameresco, Inc. has announced the completion of a comprehensive energy storage project on behalf of Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The project began in 2015 when Ameresco secured two Energy Storage Facility Agreements from the IESO to design, build, own and operate 2 MW, four-hour “Battery Solid” energy storage systems. These recently completed systems provide 16 MWh in overall energy storage capacity. Both systems absorb power during periods of excess energy supply and deliver it back to the grid when energy demand is high.
KORE Power is developing battery storage technology which could lead to a manufacturing facility being sited in the state with up to 2,000 jobs. KORE Power produces lithium ion batteries using a similar technology to batteries today, but with higher density and less cost, said CEO Lindsay Gorrill. The cells can be used in a variety of products, ranging from an electric bicycle to the massive storage a utility company would use, he said.
A handful of European states have moved to bankroll various World Bank clean energy initiatives, with £200 million (US$250 million) of UK money to back energy storage in middle-income and developing countries. The funding comes as part of the Climate Investment Funds’ Global Energy Storage Program, which runs in collaboration with the World Bank’s Energy Storage Partnership. The program has an aim of financing 17.5GWh of battery storage by 2025, over triple the 4-5GWh installed across all developing countries, the World Bank said.
