Two Cal Poly Pomona engineering professors have won a $149,000 grant from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to continue development of a low-cost energy storage system using reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC), the byproduct of water desalinization plants. As droughts increase, more communities, especially in the Southwest U.S., are considering desalinization plants to meet their fresh water needs. However, ROC is harmful to the environment due to its high salt content, biocides, metals and coagulents. At the same time, the energy sector is looking for more cost-effective methods of energy storage.

Canada’s Hydrostor has closed US$37 million in growth financing. The company plans to use the funding to complete construction of the 5 MW/10 MWh Angas Project in South Australia and to advance its 2 GW pipeline of large-scale advanced compressed air energy storage projects.
GE won its biggest grid battery deal so far, to supply a solar plant in South Australia. The 200-megawatt Solar River plant will be coupled with a 100-megawatt/300-megawatt-hour GE Reservoir grid storage system. Solar River could start generating power as early as 2021. This battery will outrank South Australia’s Hornsdale Power Reserve, the Tesla-supplied system that currently holds the title for world’s largest. Like that battery, it will provide fast-reacting capacity for a state grid dealing with rapid renewables growth and baseload coal retirement. But the GE system will use its longer energy duration to turn solar power into a dispatchable resource.

The City of Fayetteville, Arkansas, is now home to one of the first large-scale solar-plus-storage systems in the mid-South, a joint project between the city, Ozarks Electric Cooperative, and Today’s Power Inc. The project consists of three solar arrays and two battery facilities sited near Fayetteville’s two water treatment facilities. With a capacity of 10 MW of solar and 24 MWh of energy storage, the installation will save the city approximately $180,000 per year.
