100×30 Vision

In 2020, ESA released an expanded vision, projecting 100 GW of growth by 2030.

ESA’s latest report expands upon the previous 35×25 vision and projects that by the end of the decade, the industry will see 100 GW of new energy storage systems in the U.S. by 2030.

The 100×30 paper depicts a path to 100 GW of new energy storage in the next decade, based on an extrapolation of the original 35×25 Vision report, experts’ growth projections, and the impact of accelerating the clean energy transformation of the U.S. electricity grid.

  • Technologies included in the 100 GW of new energy storage include batteries, thermal, mechanical and pumped storage hydro.
  • ESA estimates that 100 GW of storage deployment by 2030 would produce 200,000 jobs in the energy storage industry, roughly a threefold increase from current levels.

After an assessment of progress made toward the attainment of the 35 GW by 2025 vision, the paper describes how the need for storage will dramatically increase over the coming decade as a result of increasing levels of clean electricity generation and the drive to decarbonize the grid.   Energy storage enables clean energy resource expansion while maintaining the reliability, resilience, and affordability of U.S. electricity supply.  Combined with other grid benefits already provided by storage today – such as maintaining grid stability, serving as transmission or distribution assets, or helping customers manage their energy use – storage built to enable the clean energy transformation will boost deployment toward the 100 GW goal. 

In addition to the market drivers, the pace of energy storage deployment will depend upon a supportive policy framework.   The paper includes recommendations for legislators, regulators, and utilities to encourage energy storage through regulatory and policy reforms, such as enacting a federal stand-alone storage investment tax credit.

35×25 Vision

In 2017, ESA released a vision for 35 GW of new energy storage systems by 2025.

In this report, we detail the emerging opportunities to drive the deployment of more than 35 GW of new energy storage systems in the U.S. by 2025 and, in turn, move the U.S. toward a disruption-proof grid.

The benefits to consumers, utilities and grid operators for deploying 35 GW are tremendous:

  • Faster, more accurate response within seconds, resulting in $4 billion in cumulative operational cost savings;
  • Customer engagement to help modernize the grid;
  • Improved reliability and resilience;
  • Reduced emissions; and
  • The creation of more than 167,000 jobs in manufacturing and R&D, construction, project development, operations and maintenance, construction, sales, marketing, management, administrative, and other positions.
