More than 150 Groups Urge Congress to Add Energy Storage Tax Credit to Infrastructure Bill
Environmental Defense Fund, NRDC, Solar Energy Industries Association, American Clean Power Association join effort
More than 50 small businesses across country make ask for ITC
WASHINGTON—More than 150 organizations today sent a letter to U.S. House and Senate leaders requesting they include bipartisan legislation that would make standalone storage projects eligible for the investment tax credit (ITC) in the upcoming infrastructure bill. The letter, spearheaded by the U.S. Energy Storage Association, was signed by a diverse group of industry trade organizations, environmental advocacy groups, and small businesses across the United States.
The tax credit “is a common-sense policy that would spur greater investment and create new jobs in the energy storage industry while extending the benefits of storage deployment among a wider diversity of technologies and industries,” wrote the groups. “Those deployments in turn will accelerate the transition to clean energy, improve power system resilience, and position U.S. companies as leaders in globally competitive energy storage markets—exactly the reasons why the House of Representatives passed it last year as part of the Moving Forward Act.”
Large environmental organizations that joined include the Environmental Defense Fund, National Resources Defense Council, League of Conservation Voters, Union of Concerned Scientists, League of Conservation Voters and National Wildlife Federation.
Major clean energy organizations signing the letter include the American Clean Power Association, Solar Energy Industries Association, American Council on Renewable Energy, National Hydropower Association, and Advanced Energy Economy.
Earlier this month, Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) and Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) introduced the Energy Storage Tax Incentive and Deployment Act (S. 627 / H.R. 1684) to remove limits on applying the tax credit to storage technologies only when integrated with ITC-eligible solar projects.
Added the groups: “As the Biden Administration and Congress consider legislation to confront the climate crisis in economic recovery, we encourage you to support U.S. companies’ investment and jobs in making America’s power system more resilient, sustainable and affordable with energy storage. ITC eligibility for energy storage is among the nearest-term opportunities to advance clean energy in this Congress, and we encourage you to make passage a priority this year.”
