Holding on to power - Why storage is a crucial part of the state’s new energy vision

Today, only 5 percent of New Jersey’s total electricity generation is from renewable sources. This is mostly solar with some biomass and wind. However, the 2019 NJ Energy Master Plan sets a goal of 100 percent of the state’s energy needs coming from clean energy by 2050. There are many pieces to hitting this target, but the state has mandated that 50 percent of its electricity should come from renewable sources by 2030. For example, 3,500 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind generation capacity is a part of this mandate. This figure represents 20 percent of today’s 18,000 MW of total electric generator capacity.

Deloitte: Intermittent renewables pass COVID-19 grid reliability test

The COVID-19 pandemic has served as a “test case demonstration” for grid reliability with a higher use of renewables in recent months, according to Deloitte Consulting. Through mid-June, renewable energy overtook coal generation in the mix for 116 days, compared to 39 days in 2019. A Deloitte Resources 2020 study, discussed on Wednesday at a panel on the pandemic impacts of energy management, anticipates a growing level of wind and solar penetration, despite the pandemic and ensuing economic conditions.

New Room-Temperature Liquid-Metal Battery Could Be the Path to Powering the Future

Researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin have built a new type of battery that combines the many benefits of existing options while eliminating their key shortcomings and saving energy. Most batteries are composed of either solid-state electrodes, such as lithium-ion batteries for portable electronics, or liquid-state electrodes, including flow batteries for smart grids. The UT researchers have created what they call a “room-temperature all-liquid-metal battery,” which includes the best of both worlds of liquid- and solid-state batteries.

Statement from ESA CEO Kelly Speakes-Backman on the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis "Solving the Climate Crisis" Report

“ESA commends the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis for continuing to prioritize meaningful recommendations that include support for a stand-alone investment tax credit for energy storage. Energy storage is an enabling technology that aligns with the Committee’s focus on grid resilience, achieving net zero emissions, and bringing clean and advanced energy sources to our electric grid. We thank the Select Committee for understanding the importance of a storage ITC to foster resilient, efficient, sustainable and affordable electric service. ESA encourages Congress to pass legislation that includes a storage ITC with a direct payment option to support economic recovery and make the American economy more resilient.”

Building battery storage systems to meet changing market requirements

In the previous edition of PV Tech Power, we spoke to four leading developers of solar-plus-storage and standalone energy storage projects about what it takes to get projects over the line, their experiences in the field – and what sort of technologies are making their efforts possible. This time around, we’ve spoken in depth with two of the system integrator/ manufacturers that supply that segment of the energy storage market. Danny Lu, vice president at Powin Energy and Dr Zhuang Cai, R&D director at Sungrow, share their insights on what it means to build lithium-ion battery storage systems at scale.
