Federal bills creating standalone storage tax credit raise hopes for significant boost, akin to solar

Federal lawmakers on Tuesday introduced legislation that would expand the investment tax credit (ITC) to apply to standalone energy storage systems, which advocates say would further spur storage deployments and bring new technologies closer to being economic.

The Energy Storage Tax Incentive and Deployment Act would extend to both residential battery systems, as well as commercial and utility-scale energy storage projects, whether they are batteries, pumped hydropower, hydrogen, or another kind of storage technology.

Could solar panels and batteries on your home help prevent the next grid disaster?

Even small systems like those that kept the lights on for some Texas homeowners could play a role in protecting the bigger electricity system, experts say. Small-scale solar energy projects, coupled with batteries that can store the power collected on your roof, can keep a household’s lights on even when the rest of the grid goes down. But they are also starting to play a valuable role in supporting that bigger grid, if networked together and used correctly into a sort of “virtual power plant.”

Denmark approves artificial island to site 10GW Offshore Wind hub

Denmark, the nation that built the world’s first offshore wind farm, has agreed to an ambitious plan for another global first – an energy island in the North Sea which could eventually be capable of supplying energy to a history-making 10 million homes. The move will create a critical boost to the world’s offshore wind capacity. The first “hub and spoke” energy scheme will involve building an island 80 kilometres off the Danish coastline to act as the transmission centre for hundreds of wind turbines surrounding it. At $34 billion, it’s the largest construction project in Danish history.
