Energy storage hits record level in third quarter

A record 476 megawatts (MW) of storage were deployed in the third quarter, a 240 increase over the previous high, according to the latest US Energy Storage Monitor report from Wood Mackenzie and the U.S. Energy Storage Association’s (ESA).

The increases were across the board, but the most dramatic rise came in front-of-the-meter (FTM) storage procurements, particularly in California. The FTM segment grew to 400 MW and 578 MWh in the third quarter, surpassing previous 133 MW and 296 MWh records for this sector. To further illustrate the meteoric growth, FTM storage installed in the third quarter was higher than all other segments during any other quarter over the past 7 years.

“Energy storage deployments continue to grow, despite the economic downturn and COVID-related slowdowns,” Kelly Speakes-Backman, U.S. Energy Storage Association CEO, said. “The signs are pointing toward an unprecedented increase in energy storage in the coming months, moving us closer toward achieving our 100 GW by 2030 vision. With continued policy support and regulatory reform at the state and federal levels, energy storage is poised to continue this trajectory and enable a more resilient, efficient, sustainable, and affordable electric grid for all.”

US sets new record in energy storage deployment in Q3 - 2020

A new report released by Wood Mackenzie and the US Energy Storage Association states the US energy storage market has increased by 240% in the third quarter of 2020 compared to the second quarter. Up to 764MWh of energy storage capacity was deployed in Q3, more than twice the previous high. Although the residential segment grew,  the major growth was in the front-of-the-meter (FTM) segment, resulting in a new record being set. California deployed the majority of the FTM projects.

Companies Announce New Residential VPP for California

A distributed energy power plant, designed to help bring more reliability to California’s power grid, is being developed by a company whose investors include Alphabet, the parent company of Google. The project when fully developed would be the world’s largest residential virtual power plant (VPP). Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners (SIP), a group that builds, owns, operates, and invests in advanced infrastructure projects and technology companies, on Dec. 7 released details of a $100 million deal as part of Resilia, the company’s new advanced power grid platform.

US DOE Incorporates Microgrids into Plan for 16 Federal Projects

In another sign that the US government is making energy resilience a priority, the Department of Energy (DOE) is incorporating microgrids as part of a program to spur $440 million in energy improvements for 16 federal projects microgrids. Announced late last week, the effort is meant to bring energy efficiency and resilience to a range of facilities from ports to military bases to building campuses.

It's time to unlock Canada's energy storage potential in the climate change fight

Energy storage’s potential and value needs to be allowed to shine for Canada to achieve its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 – and to avoid being left behind in the international race to modernise global energy systems, writes Justin Wahid Rangooni, executive director of the trade association Energy Storage Canada.

Southern California Edison Inks Another Massive Round of Utility-Scale Battery Contracts

Six months after inking California’s single-largest energy storage procurement, utility Southern California Edison has added another three massive utility-scale battery projects to its portfolio — plus a behind-the-meter battery project with Sunrun. Monday’s new contracts include 585 megawatts of lithium-ion batteries: 325 MW from NextEra Energy’s Desert Peak project, 200 MW from Recurrent Energy’s Crimson project, and 60 MW from 174 Power Global/Hanwha Group’s Eldorado Valley project.

California will need up to 55GW of long-duration energy storage by 2045, study finds

For California to achieve its target of eliminating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its electricity sector by 2045, the state will need to deploy between 45GW and 55GW of long-duration energy storage, a new study has found. Meeting an interim goal of sourcing 60% of California’s electricity from renewables by 2030 will itself require between 2GW to 11GW of long-duration energy storage, consultancy group Strategen said in the study, which was commissioned by the California Energy Storage Alliance (CESA).

US Energy Storage Market Shatters Records in Q3 2020

According to Wood Mackenzie and the U.S. Energy Storage Association’s (ESA) latest ’US Energy Storage Monitor’ report, 476 megawatts (MW) of storage were deployed in Q3 2020. This is an increase of 240% over the previous high, set last quarter. As noted in the research, the new record for storage is not an anomaly but rather a sign of things to come as front-of-the-meter (FTM) storage procurements, particularly in California, grow dramatically in number and size.

“Energy storage deployments continue to grow, despite the economic downturn and COVID-related slowdowns,” said Kelly Speakes-Backman, U.S. Energy Storage Association CEO. “The signs are pointing toward an unprecedented increase in energy storage in the coming months, moving us closer toward achieving our 100 GW by 2030 vision.
