Enel X and Eaton Team Up on Solar and Storage Microgrid in Puerto Rico

Enel X and power equipment and management company Eaton will partner on a solar-storage microgrid in Puerto Rico, one of the largest yet built on an island struggling to restructure its hurricane-battered power grid. The microgrid, Enel X’s first such project in Puerto Rico, will provide backup power at Eaton’s circuit breaker factory in the coastal city of Arecibo. It will center on a 5-megawatt solar array and 1.1 megawatt/2.2 megawatt-hours of battery storage.

US storage deployments shatter record in Q3, with 7.5 GW projected by 2025: WoodMac

A record-breaking 476 MW of storage resources were deployed in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2020 — a 240% increase over the previous record, which was set in the previous quarter — a December report from Wood Mackenzie and the U.S. Energy Storage Association (ESA) found. The domestic battery energy storage market is set to grow sixfold to a total of nearly 7.5 GW — with a $7.3 billion annual market  — by 2025, predominantly due to large-scale utility procurements, most of which will be paired with solar resources, according to the report.

Mississippi Power plans 'smart neighborhood' with Tesla batteries, Solar Roofs

Southern Company subsidiary Mississippi Power, a utility that serves over 188,000 customers across 23 southeast Mississippi counties, recently announced a partnership to build what it says is the world’s first smart neighborhood to exclusively feature the Tesla Solar Roof. The Lauderdale County neighborhood will undergo the construction of about 45 homes in its initial phase, with plans to build up to 150 homes. Construction on the smart neighborhood is set to begin in early 2021. The homes will also feature technology like smart home automation; Tesla Powerwall batteries, which store energy to be available on-demand at any time; and energy-efficient equipment and appliances like smart thermostats and refrigerators, according to Mississippi Power spokesperson Jeff Shepard.

Senate confirms Clements and Christie to FERC, lengthy list of issues awaits new Commission

For the first time in nearly two years, FERC is at full strength, with the confirmations of Mark Christie and Allison Clements bringing the agency to a full five members. With Neil Chatterjee leaving in June, the agency is set to have a Democratic majority in the near future.

Regulations around hybrid storage and generation and rules around storage as transmission are among the main issues that the Energy Storage Association (ESA) would like to see FERC take on, Kelly Speakes-Backman, the ESA’s CEO said. The ESA would also like to see PJM capacity accreditation for storage approved, and it would like to see market design incorporate the value of flexibility, she added.

The US energy storage market was redefined in Q3

A record 476 MW/764 MWh were installed in Q3, with California’s deployment figures alone shattering all previous quarterly records. According to the latest edition of Wood Mackenzie’s U.S. energy storage monitor, the country deployed 476 MW of energy storage in Q2, 240% more than was installed in Q2, which just so happened to be the previous quarterly record for installed capacity. That 476 MW mark represents more than 500% year-over-year growth from Q3 2019.

U.S. Deploys Record Amount of Energy Storage in Q3

Approximately 476  MW of energy storage were  deployed this year – an increase of  240% over the previous high set last quarter, according to Wood Mackenzie and the U.S. Energy Storage Association’s (ESA) recently released U.S. Energy Storage Monitor report. As noted in the research, the new record  for storage  is  not an anomaly but rather predictive of things to come as front-of-the-meter  (FTM)  storage procurements, particularly in California, grow  dramatically  in number and size.
