Researchers Propose New Diamond Nanostructure For Efficient Energy Storage

One of the biggest challenges for renewable energy research is energy storage. The goal is to find a material with high energy storage capacity and energy storage material with high storage capacity that can also quickly and efficiently discharge a large amount of energy. In an attempt to overcome this hurdle, researchers at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) have proposed a brand-new carbon nanostructure designed to store energy in mechanical form.

This virtual power plant demo in Louisiana tests a cool, new solar, storage platform

Heila Technologies is deploying intelligent energy storage+solar systems at a demonstration project in Shreveport, La., using SimpliPhi Power technology, with the support of Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO), an American Electric Power (AEP) company. The demo will aggregate distributed energy resources and empower SWEPCO to manage these assets as an optimized fleet. This project will serve as a model for other stakeholders who are interested in the benefits of decentralized energy generation and storage working as a virtual power plant.

TECHNOLOGY: Siemens eyes Tesla-beating battery for Australia grid woes

Three years after Elon Musk took up a challenge to solve Australian power outages by building the world’s biggest battery, a Siemens AG venture wants to install even larger ones to bolster renewable investment in the nation. Fluence Energy, a partnership between Germany’s Siemens and Arlington, Virginia-based AES Corp., is proposing to build two giant lithium-ion batteries at strategic points on the transmission grid to allow better access for clusters of wind and solar plants. It says it can have the units up and running within 18 months, much quicker than building out transmission infrastructure to accommodate more renewables.

Solar, Wind, Storage Link Arms for "Majority Renewables" Push by 2030

The U.S. solar, wind, energy storage and hydropower industries announced a new era of cooperation between their sectors, with a goal of bringing renewables to a majority of electricity generation by 2030. While the American solar and wind industries have long fought for many of the same policies on the national stage, the two markets are largely supported by different mechanisms at the federal level, and a policy victory for one industry has not always meant a victory for the other.

That uneven support has at times appeared to put the industries at odds with each other, but the initiative announced this week makes explicit their plans to coordinate efforts. “We have a common vision,” said ESA CEO Kelly Speakes-Backman.

Renewables Gain Investors as Some Flee Oil, Gas, and Coal

“There are concerns about financiers saying just wait and see, but I have not heard about anyone trying to renegotiate a project,” said Kelly Speakes-Backman, CEO of the Energy Storage Association, in an interview with POWER. Speakes-Backman is among the keynote speakers confirmed for POWER’s Distributed Energy Conference in Chicago, Illinois, Oct. 19-21.

“I can tell you I don’t see this crisis impacting the long-term ability of storage to grow,” Speakes-Backman said. “We’re expecting a 300% increase in storage deployment this year, so even a 50% drop in that means we’re still doing well. I really feel like this is going to be a near-term situation for our industry. People have already begun to realize the importance of energy storage to decarbonizing the grid, and I don’t think that goes away with this crisis.”

Global Energy Storage to Rebound and Witness Strong Capacity Additions Despite Pandemic: Report

Despite the current covid-19 pandemic, the medium-term future for energy storage remains bright. That’s according to Frost & Sullivan’s recent analysis, “Outlook for the Global Energy Storage Industry, 2020.” Just last month the US Energy Storage Association (ESA) released survey results that showed the impact that the novel coronavirus will have on the industry. The study focused on analyzing the covid-19 effect on energy storage companies’ revenue, employment and projects in the second quarter.

Green Mountain Power expands BYOD and Tesla battery programs as it targets fossil peakers

Vermont regulators approved on Wednesday a Green Mountain Power program that offers rates for customer-sited battery storage, including a bring your own device (BYOD) option. Starting June 5, customers can enroll in GMP’s Tesla Powerwall program or subscribe to rates with their own storage system for the next 15 years, based on GMP’s previous pilots. The utility claims to be the first in the country to use customer-sited stored energy to lower peak energy use across its system, lowering costs for all customers.
