Replacing peakers with storage to achieve the greatest health benefit

Peaker generating units causing the greatest health burdens can be retired and replaced with storage. That’s the idea behind a new data visualization resource from Physicians, Scientists, and Engineers for Healthy Energy (PSE). The U.S. has more than 1,000 peaker units, which operate only at times of peak load, and often have high hourly emissions. Many are located in areas with high proportions of minority and low-income residents.

Plus Power Breaks Into Battery Big League With Grid-Tied Project for Hawaiian Electric

Earlier this month Hawaiian Electric announced a slew of solar-plus-storage projects to continue its shift to fossil-free energy. Tucked inside that announcement was a big development: a massive grid-tied battery that will take over crucial duties from the last coal plant anywhere in Hawaii. The 185-megawatt/565-megawatt-hour Kapolei Energy Storage project marks a dramatic arrival to the big leagues for developer Plus Power. Plus power, an ESA member, had previously developed a 12-megawatt battery to ensure reliability at a car factory microgrid in Mexico.

Landfills emerge as promising battery storage sites to back up renewable energy

Solar panel installations have been one of the fastest-growing types of energy infrastructure in recent years and landfills have become fitting sites due to the sheer amount of land required. Now, for many of the same reasons, energy project developers are looking to landfills for a technology growing even faster than solar: battery storage. Storage on landfills is still a novel idea, with closed sites seen as largely the most suitable, and only a few examples of these projects exist.

PG&E's total storage procurements pass 1 GW with latest round of projects | Utility Dive

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) is asking California regulators to approve five lithium-ion battery storage projects amounting to 423 MW/1,692 MWh, including a 60 MW/240 MWh battery co-located with a geothermal facility, the utility announced this week. The five projects are slated to come online in August 2021 and bump up the amount of storage PG&E has under contract to more than 1,000 MW. The utility intends to issue another solicitation this summer for resources that can go into operation in 2022 and 2023.

As utilities tackle immediate COVID-19 impacts, analysts stress need to focus beyond the pandemic | Utility Dive

Data now verifies a pandemic-driven collapsing commercial-industrial (C&I) electricity load is only partially offset by sheltering-at-home customers’ spiking residential usage. Utilities have implemented measures to help residential customers cope with rising power bills. But some utility leaders and analysts are thinking beyond today’s uncertainties and looking instead toward tomorrow’s system needs in light of these shifting load dynamics, they told Utility Dive. One of the resources they’re looking at? Storage.
