U.S. Department of Energy to Provide $6M for Research to Develop Energy Storage Technologies

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy (FE) has announced up to $6 million in federal funding for cost-shared research and development projects under the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) DE-FOA-0002332, Energy Storage for Fossil Power Generation. The FOA seeks applications to (1) advance near-term, system-integrated, energy storage solutions toward commercial deployment with fossil assets; (2) mature promising mid-technology-readiness-level (TRL), component-level energy storage solutions toward eventual system integration with fossil assets; (3) develop innovative, low-TRL concepts and technologies that offer game-changing benefits for fossil assets.

US has 69GW of hybrid renewables-plus-battery projects in interconnection queues | Energy Storage News

A study produced by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), found that the US already has 4.6GW of utility-scale hybrid resource capacity online, with a further 14.7GW in the “immediate development pipeline.” Furthermore, in total a massive 69GW in total sit in the interconnection queues of various Regional Transmission Organisations (RTOs) and Independent System Operators (ISOs), the bulk transmission operators in the US tasked with ensuring reliability and affordability of electricity supply around the country.

EDP Renewables secures a 100 MW solar PPA in United States

EDP Renováveis, SA (“EDPR”), a global leader in the renewable energy sector and one of the world’s largest wind energy producers, through its fully owned subsidiary EDP Renewables North America LLC, has secured a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (“PPA”) with Redwood Coast Energy Authority (“RCEA”) to sell the energy produced by the 100 MW Sandrini Sol 1 solar pv project. The project, located in the state of California in the United States, is expected to come online in 2022.

SimpliPhi Power Teams Up with Footprint Project to Deliver Clean Energy Microgrid to Field Hospital for Matamoros Migrant Camp Fighting COVID-19

SimpliPhi Power, a leading U.S. manufacturer of safe, cobalt-free lithium ion energy storage systems, has partnered with non-profit Footprint Project to supply and deliver a clean energy microgrid field hospital for the Matamoros migrant camp in Mexico on the U.S. border to power the camp’s first mobile medical ICU to treat COVID-19 patients. The camp is comprised of approximately 3,000 asylum seekers living in overcrowded tents with little infrastructure and no access to basic medical care or hygiene, enhancing the threat of COVID-19 contagion.

Grid order's unintended clean energy consequence

Concern is particularly acute for the energy storage sector, which was on track to add record levels of battery capacity this year before the coronavirus crisis hit. DOE will release a rulemaking proposal within 150 days that details what devices will be singled out for bans or increased oversight. But Kelly Speakes-Backman, CEO of the Energy Storage Association, said members need clarification as soon as this week if all the sector’s planned projects are to move forward.

The U.S. Energy Storage Association (ESA) unveiled its 2020-2021 executive committee officers last week, along with a newcomer to its board, Jeff Bishop, co-founder and CEO of Key Capture Energy. For the trade association, elections are a yearly measure, resulting in a changing board of directors that selected new officers. In this case, the chosen officers include Board Chair John Hewa of Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, Immediate Past Chair Troy Miller of GE Renewable Energy, Vice Chair Kiran Kumaraswamy of Fluence, Treasurer Dr. Peter Muhoro of National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation, with Jacqueline DeRosa of Ameresco rounding out the appointments as secretary.
