8minute Solar Energy Expands Development Pipeline to 18 Gigawatts with New Solar-Plus-Storage Power Plants

8minute Solar Energy (8minute) announced that the company has added 3 gigawatts (GW) of large-scale solar projects to its development pipeline this month, for a total of over 18 GW—enough to provide power for 20 million people. The company further announced it has attracted additional corporate-level funding to develop the rapidly growing pipeline, the majority of which will be converted to the company’s new generation solar power plant design with battery energy storage.

COVID-19 hits clean energy jobs, but storage companies could be 'bucking the trend'

The COVID-19 pandemic is causing industry-wide job losses, but many storage developers are optimistic they won’t have to reduce their workforce, according to a survey conducted by the U.S. Energy Storage Association (ESA). The survey included 101 storage companies, including contractors, three-fourths of which did not expect they would reduce employment — despite the fact that nearly two-thirds anticipate a decrease in revenue. Southern California Towns Turn to Battery Energy Storage for Stability

Several California towns will soon benefit from new lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery energy storage systems. California Choice Energy Authority (CalChoice), a hybrid of five operational community choice aggregations (CCAs) in the cities of Lancaster, Pico Rivera, Rancho Mirage, San Jacinto, and the Town of Apple Valley, California will be able to take advantage of this program. Under the new contract, esVolta will develop, build, and operate the Black Walnut Energy Storage project, a 15 MW/60 MWh facility to be built in Santa Paula, California. The project is slated to be in service by June 2022. Keep reading.

California: We Need 1GW of New Long-Duration Energy Storage by 2026

California officials expect that the state needs 1 gigawatt of new long-duration energy storage by 2026 to advance its clean-energy transition. That figure emerged in the “reference system portfolio” that the California Public Utilities Commission approved on March 26. The grid planning document calls for no new gas plants, although almost all of the existing capacity is expected to remain online throughout the decade. But it adds 11 gigawatts of utility-scale solar by 2030, nearly 3 gigawatts of wind and a groundbreaking amount of energy storage. Keep reading.

New battery plant planned for U.S.

The surge in renewable energy such as wind and solar power is a reason why energy storage solutions developer KORE Power has announced it intends to open a U.S. plant with a tentative 2021 start construction timeline and goal of creating approximately 2,000 jobs when fully operational. The plant — in a location yet to be determined — will produce lithium-ion batteries for wind and solar operations, microgrids and other large-scale uses. Keep reading.
